Jubilee Year Parish Pilgrimage of St. John the Apostle: A Journey of Faith and Joy Monday, August 4, 2025 — Feast of St. John Vianney

On the Feast of St. John Vianney, patron saint of parish priests, our parish community embarked on a sacred pilgrimage to St. Anthony of Padua Parish and the Shrine of Sto. Niño de Cebu in Agassiz- one of the three holy sites designated by Archbishop J. Michael Miller for the Jubilee Year. This special day was a profound opportunity to deepen our faith, walk in hope, and unite in joyful prayer and reflection.

The timing of our pilgrimage was no coincidence. St. John Vianney, known for his humility, pastoral zeal, and tireless devotion to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, reminds us of the grace found in spiritual renewal and community. As we journeyed together, we carried his spirit with us—seeking healing, inspiration, and a deeper connection to Christ.

Upon arriving in Agassiz, we were warmly welcomed by the pastor, Fr. Dennis Flores. The Shrine of Sto. Niño de Cebu, with its vibrant devotion and rich heritage, offered a sacred space for prayer, thanksgiving, and celebration.

This pilgrimage was a living testament to our parish’s commitment to walk together in faith. We returned home renewed, grateful, and inspired—ready to continue the journey with hearts open to grace and lives rooted in hope.

Thank you to all who joined, prayed, and supported this beautiful day. May the example of St. John Vianney guide us in love and service and may the blessings of this Jubilee Year continue to unfold in our parish family.

What is the Jubilee Year?

 
The Jubilee Year of Hope is a profoundly significant and grace-filled year for our Archdiocese. It offers us unique opportunities to deepen our relationship with God and one another. Pope Francis encourages us to be “pilgrims of hope” on our journey to the Father’s House (cf. John 14:2).
A Jubilee Year is celebrated by the Universal Church every 25 years. This special year is dedicated to encouraging the faithful to embark on pilgrimages, repent of their sins, forgive others’ sins, and renew their focus on spiritual life.

The Ordinary Jubilee of 2025 invites us to embark on a meaningful pilgrimage of hope! Whether participating in local pilgrimages or making a journey to Rome, the message is clear: let us actively seek and share signs of hope across all areas of our lives—within our families, our neighborhoods and especially for those facing challenges such as illness, poverty, or imprisonment. What does the Jubilee Mean for Vancouver?

Archbishop Miller reflects on what the Jubilee Year of Hope means for Vancouver—how it invites us to renewal, deepens our faith, and calls us to share hope with others.

Clarification on Holy Doors during the Jubilee of Hope

The Archdiocese of Vancouver has received many inquiries regarding Holy Doors during the Jubilee Year of Hope. This Jubilee Year, Pope Francis has designated Holy Doors exclusively at the four major papal basilicas in Rome to highlight the unity of the universal Church and to invite Catholics worldwide to make the traditional pilgrimage to Rome. There are no Holy Doors in Vancouver, though Catholics can still obtain the Jubilee Indulgence by following the instructions below.

The faithful can receive a plenary indulgence during the Jubilee Year by visiting one of the three sacred locations designated by Archbishop Miller, provided they also meet the additional conditions established for receiving the indulgence.

So, what exactly is an indulgence? 
It’s essential to understand how it complements the Sacrament of Reconciliation. While confession forgives sins, it doesn’t remove all their effects. Every sin leaves a mark that requires healing, whether in this life or after death in Purgatory. Indulgences take away these lingering consequences.
Ordinarily, we remove the temporal punishment due to our sins through prayer, penance, and works of charity. These heal our damaged relationship with God. The Church, however, can facilitate this removal in other ways by granting indulgences.
As holder of the “keys of the kingdom” (Mt 16:19), the Pope has the authority from Christ to grant indulgences. He can unlock the infinite treasury of graces earned by Jesus’ Passion and Death and complemented by the prayers and good works of Mary and the Saints. In granting an indulgence, God offers sinners complete forgiveness of the temporal punishment due to their sins.
Indulgences can be either partial or plenary. A partial indulgence remits some of the temporal punishment due to sin, and a plenary indulgence removes all such punishment.
To receive the Jubilee indulgence, whether for yourself or a soul in Purgatory, Pope Francis outlines specific conditions: going to Confession, receiving Holy Communion, praying for the Pope’s intentions, and being totally detached from all sin, including venial sin. These requirements can be fulfilled several days before or after making the pilgrimage. 
This Jubilee Year, let’s call upon the maternal intercession of Mary, the Mother of Hope. At Calvary, she stood steadfast beneath the Cross of Jesus, “hoping against hope” (Romans 4:18), unwavering in her belief in his Resurrection. She transformed the silence of Holy Saturday into a time of hope-filled expectation.
May the Blessed Virgin Mary inspire us to grow in trust in the Lord, echoing the final words of the Te Deum: “In you, Lord, is our hope, and we shall never hope in vain.”
